Be sure to have on your blog this evening:
1 The character description
2 Your group work on the chapter
Then it is on to the following:
For next week, review these five topics and pick one that interests you. Research it using wikipedia, and other sources. Create your own blog and narrate what you have found out. Use visuals, always cite your sources. Be prepared for a 3 minute mini-presentation.
Next week, I will ask students who chose topic 1, 2, etc. to sit together for 20 minutes to discuss the key points and ideas they found out. These five groups will then present to the class. Remember that everybody needs to have their own blog post. This is not group work. It becomes topic centered group work in class.

And in the coming weeks...
After this, we will take a close look at German youth cultures and viewing the cult movie Berlin calling on 10-29. Then we will schedule two wednesday evenings to meet with me in my office. Each student will see me once for 10 minutes to discuss progress in class. Those two Wednesdays early November, class will not met but you will all have research topics to keep you involved, while I meet each one individually in my office LH116. Sign-up sheets will be out in two weeks.

Topics for next week, 10-22:
Topic 1 - Anthroposophy developed by Rudolf Steiner putting the person at the center of healing and caring efforts. Even the architecture of anthroposophic buildings reflected the teachings of Steiner: rooms had five corners and buildings did not feature 90 degree angles. Rhythm was important to healing and mental development. Related: Eurhythmics and Music education by Orff.
Topic 2 -Turnvater Jahn - German gymnast believing in physical education of body and mind - and helping blue collar workers stay fit in very poisonous working environments. This movement was adopted in every German town and city. Clubs opened, and sports became a major pastime for workers and lower to middle class Germans.

German Gymnastics[edit]
Started by Johann Guts Muth and Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, used large fixed apparatus, vaulting and marching. Jahn felt that physical conditioning was essential for a strong nation. The German system had a "militaristic" view of fitness, with a very strict, formal style of physical training: Jahn's purpose in promoting what he called the 'Turnverein' movement was to mold the German youth into strong citizens. It was introduced to America by Charles Beck, a German immigrant. Although they were based on the ideas and work of Friedrich Jahn, the American system was less nationalistic.
Swedish Gymnastics[edit]
Sometimes called the "Swedish Movement Cure," founded by Pehr Henrik Ling, was a health-oriented approach and recognized for inherent medical values. The Swedish "light gymnastics" used no apparatus, consisting of calisthenics and exercises. It was freer and less rigid than the German system. The Swedish system was made popular in America from the 1880s under Hartvig Nissen and Nils Posse.

Topic 4 -Foods and German cuisine. German have developed a new leisure activity, that has brought them in touch with foods from many other cultures: the annual 3-week vacation abroad. Austria, Spain, Italy, and Scandinavia are well-liked destinations. This annual ritual started in the 60ies of the 20th century, and changed the cuisine, eating habits, and expectations of the German palate. For 50 years, the German cuisine has undergone dramatic change, and now includes many dishes adopteed from countries around the world. However, a fair number of traditional German (local) dishes remain. And not just Labskaus.
